Devoted to the Global South, SOUTH SOUTH was conceived by Johannesburg's Goodman Gallery and now brings together a consortium of international galleries which exchange and collaborate with the goal of creating a wider and more inclusive art world.
The platform’s inaugural event SOUTH SOUTH VEZA takes its name from the isiZulu word for “to show, produce or reveal.” It will run from 23 February to 7 March 2021 featuring 50+ galleries from more than 40 cities spread across 30 countries and 5 continents. To kick-off, the program will host a live vernissage and online bidding auction on Tuesday, 23 February, at 1pm GMT. Amongst available works, you’ll find a paper-based work by beloved Australian artist Lindy Lee, a tapestry by Syrian-American Etel Adnan (featured in our Visionary Women Artists Masterclass), a collage by Brazillian Beatriz Milhazes, known for record-breaking auction sales, a multi-layered work by acclaimed South-African William Kentridge, and a unique print by British-Nigerian Yinka Shonibare CBE RA from the Young British Artists generation. A percentage of profits will go to non-profit art organisations.
The program also comprises Gallery-Curated Online Viewing Rooms (OVRs); an exhibition presented by independent Angola-based curators Paula Nascimento and Suzana Souza; a think thank organised by Elvira Dyangani Ose, Director of The Showroom, London; and a film program curated by Rodrigo Moura, Chief Curator of Museo del Barrio, New York. Participating galleries include Anna Schwartz (Melbourne) and Sullivan+Strumpf (Sydney-Singapore).
