Although the recent lockdowns in Melbourne and Sydney have got us feeling a little despondent, some of our favourite galleries have opened online viewing spaces to keep our senses engaged. Enjoy the exhibition experience from the comfort of your own screen with our top picks.

Bill Henson at Tolarno Galleries, Melbourne

Looking for an exhibition that mirrors the moodiness of winter? Known for his dark, evocative work, Bill Henson’s photographs currently on display at Torlano Galleries are immersive by nature. Made up of a curated selection of never-seen-before photographs, all of which were completed during Melbourne’s long COVID lockdowns, it seems timely to explore Torlano’s online viewing space. Continues until 24 July.

Arepo by Karen Black at Sutton Gallery, Melbourne

Karen Black is a Sydney-based artist who is known for her colourfully abstract, theatrical paintings. If her name doesn’t ring a bell you might just remember an example of her work prominently featured in one of the iconic shots of Troye Sivan’s Flack Studio-designed Melbourne home. Arepo is Black’s latest solo exhibition at Brunswick Street’s Sutton Gallery. It features multiple double-panelled paintings in her signature bold, colour-clashing strokes.

Flowers of the Night by Lynda Draper at Sullivan + Strumpf, Sydney

Maybe you’re after something a little more ethereal? Inspired by her night-time wanderings, in her new exhibition Flowers of the Night Lynda Draper explores the line between subconscious dream states and reality. Spend some time in Draper’s dream like world via Sullivan + Strumpf.

Archie at Home at the Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney

Immerse yourself in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes exhibition with this 360-degree experience presented by the Art Gallery of NSW. As you guide yourself through the Gallery space, you can learn about the individual works that make up this prestigious exhibition. Moving between exhibitions can sometimes feel like an exhausting experience, but with Archie at Home all you have to do is click on ‘view floor plan’ to hop between the various spaces. Continues until 26 September.

DAY TRIP by Evi O + Andrew Grune at Saint Cloche, Sydney

Being stuck at home has made a lot of us lust over day trips out into nature or even a park a few suburbs away if a long drive is out of the question. In DAY TRIP currently showing at Saint Cloche, Evi O’s bold paintings and Andrew Grune’s entrancing photographs act as an ode to nature. Coinciding with the launch of their book, DAY TRIP will hopefully incite a new appreciation for getaways beyond the metropolis. Continues until 25 July.

The Guardians by Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran at Sullivan + Strumpf, Sydney

We all love a sneak peek. Luckily Sullivan + Strumpf have granted us a preview of Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran’s sculptures which will form part of his solo exhibition ‘The Guardians,’ in October. Ramesh explores the mythological narrative of the guardian figure through a series of colourful reincarnations. Let this virtual viewing be a teaser of what is to come.
