Alana's NFT News Update - March 2022

Serwah Attafuah, Consensual Hallucinations, 2020

Dear Art Supporters and Art Collectors

Welcome to the inaugural NFT News monthly update, which Guest Club are creating exclusively for you as part of our NFT Advisory services. You may have noticed that there is A LOT of hyped up, click-bait style content out there relating to NFTs. Rest assured, I’m here to cut through the noise and share with you handful of news items, events and podcast episodes which I recommend paying attention to.

I’ve also been receiving some excellent questions from our members about their recent NFT purchases, like ‘what virtual reality worlds do I recommend?’ and ‘are hard cables necessary for screens that will display NFTs?’ - please keep them coming!

Enjoy Direct Access to Your NFTs on Your Ledger Nano

You may already know that I’m a huge advocate of storing your cryptocurrency and NFTs in a hardware wallet. Last week, Ledger announced that you no longer need to use an external third-party wallet to visualize and manage your NFTs on Ledger Nano S and X devices. Once you send your NFTs to your Ledger account , they will immediately be secured by your Ledger Nano S or X. Need help transferring your NFT’s across? Get in touch.

Worldwide NFT News - Yuga Labs buys the CryptoPunks and Meebits IP

Yuga Labs, creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club or BAYC (yes those ape NFTs) has recently announced its acquisition of the intellectual property (IP) of the Cryptopunks and Meebits NFT collections. Why is this a big deal, you might ask? Imagine Facebook/Meta acquiring Twitter. It’s also a big deal because Cryptopunks and Meebits NFTs have so far been sold to collectors with non-commercial IP licences attached. The first thing Yuga Labs will be doing with their purchase is giving full commercial rights to the NFT holders.

It’s Australian Blockchain Week

Next week is Australian Blockchain Week 2022 - 5 days of all things blockchain, decentralised finance and NFTs with dozens of experts in the field. I expect plenty of crypto bros in attendance. Luckily, yours truly will be bringing plenty of female energy to the mix, as I’ll be participating in a panel on NFTs and IP. The panel on Day 3, IRL at Marvel Stadium (!) on Wednesday 22nd March. I hear IRL tickets are sold out, but there will also be plenty of events streamed online, which you can register for here.

FOMO Be Gone - Guest Club Event on Metaverse and NFTs

For our first Sydney event since pre-COVID pandemic, join us IRL on Thursday 31st March at 6pm for a gallery visit and chat about all things Web 3 with Serwah Attafuah, artist and Georgia Mills, co-founder of NFT platform DROPLT. This event is free for Guest Club members. RSVP here.

Podcast Episode of the Month

For this month’s NFT podcast episode recommendation I’d actually like to take you back in time a few years, to a Tim Ferris Show podcast episode recorded with Nick Szabo, the polymath who coined the phrase ‘Smart Contract’ way back in 1996. Prepare for your mind to be blown by the ‘Quiet Master of Cryptocurrency’! Listen to it here.

Your Personalised NFT Recommendations for March

For those that have already completed the NFT Advisory registration form, expect your personalised NFT recommendations to reach your mailboxes this coming week. Already an Art Supporter or Art Collector member but not yet registered for our NFT Advisory services? You can complete the 30 second form here.

Finally, I’d love to hear your feedback on this inaugural NFT update. Please get in touch to let me know.

From your trusty NFT advisor,

Alana

Firstdraft Auction - Heaps of Top Notch Art Goodies Up for Grabs!

Happy Monday GC members,

I hope you are all holding up OK on this COVID rollercoaster that is 2021.

Many of us are stuck in lockdown in Melbourne and Sydney, so I want to bring you some art inspiration to lift your spirits.

One of my favourite annual fundraising art auctions is now up online, the Firstdraft Auction. Firstdraft in Sydney is one of Australia’s oldest artist-run organisations. Over more than 25 years they have done an incredible job supporting emerging and experimental art practice in Australia.

Each year, they hold an auction to raise funds for their operational costs and the line-up of artists who have donated their work for the cause is always stellar. There are heaps of Guest Club favourites in this year’s presentation, including Alexandra Standen, Huseyin Sami, Jonny Niesche, Lara Merrett, Marian Tubbs, Mason Kimber, Nabilah Nordin, Natalya Hughes, Seth Birchall, Tony Albert, Will Cooke and many more.

The full catalogue is available here and you can register to bid here. Bidding ends this Sunday 22 August.

Artists and galleries in Melbourne and Sydney are doing it REALLY tough right now, so this is a great way to support the industry and add a new piece to your collection.

Kind regards

Alana

P.S. It’s looking like we may have to cancel our next live event at STATION Gallery Melbourne on Saturday 28th August (our third live event cancelled in a row!). We have an awesome virtual event now in the works. More updates later this week.
