With preparations for our Melbourne Design Week event, Collecting Fine Design, in full swing, we thought we’d share with you some of the events and exhibitions in the program that we’re looking forward to. The theme for Melbourne Design Week 2021 is ‘Design the world you want’ and over the course of 11 days, over 300 events and exhibitions will profile how the design community can work together to build a better future for the planet and its inhabitants. From design to art and everything in-between, here are our top picks.

LAB by Justin Ridler Presented by: At the above 27 March – 04 April Venue: At the above (198 Gertrude St, Fitzroy VIC 3065, Australia)

LAB is an exhibition of new work by artist Justin Ridler which reflects on his ‘journey of connection and informal discovery’. Ridler brings to life a utopian future by creating ‘an expanding, entropic library’ of refined digital imagery which he realises in various forms, including digital prints and screen-based work.

Meredith Turnbull ‘Material Community’  26 March – 03 April Presented by: Daine Singer Venue: Daine Singer (Rear 90 Moor Street, Fitzroy 3065, Melbourne, Australia)

For Material Community, Melbourne-based artist Meredith Turnbull fuses together her interests in jewellery and art, creating an integrated installation of painting and jewellery. The exhibition is deeply rooted in the artists’ personal environment and domestic life, and how 2020 changed the way we work and the areas of our life we put value in.

FUGUE Presented by: Craft Victoria  26 March – 03 April Venue: Craft Victoria (Craft Victoria, Craft, Watson PL, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia)

Fugue is an exhibition collaboration with the JamFactory glass studio in Adelaide. Consisting of colour experiments through different types of glass vessels (beakers, vases, and bowls), Melbourne-based artist David Sequiera highlights the link between the contemporary art industry with the ideas of change and continuity in our everyday lives. Sequeria has also invited musician Patrick Telfer to create a ‘meditative soundscape’ from the sound the vessels make when clinked together.
